The screen-shots show that Culica has a deliberately “retro” graphical style that has plenty of character and suits the game play.

Culica has four difficulty levels

OK I bought it and I’m hooked.  What’s the trick?” Jack E. – USA

Play Culica because although it is dead easy to learn, it’s a great game. Culica is a bit of a challenge on easy level, there are also harder difficulty levels to challenge even hardcore puzzle fans.

“Culica is unique, a truly revolutionary puzzle game, the best since Tetris” – James Eadon, inventor of Culica.

Rules: You start off with the big shape having cubes that are coloured randomly. Your challenge is simply to change the colours of the cubes in the big shape so that one side should be all red, one all green, one all yellow, and one all blue. You change the colours of the cubes within each side by moving the 2-cube shapes onto the big shape. That’s it!

Looks easy. It’s easy to play. But is it easy to solve? (If you get stuck maybe have a look at these tips.

Culica Easy Difficulty Level

Culica is available on the Apple App Store for the Apple iPod & iPhone for 99 cents (£0.59), that’s far less than the price of a cup of coffee! You’ll find it’s a game that is fun to play anywhere. Shuffling your feet impatiently at a bus stop or waiting for a delayed train? Or are you feeling good and simply wish to be challenged? You can give the Culica a quick go at any time you like.

Once you have figured out how to win on “Easy” mode, (shown above) you will be able to improve upon your best time and challenge your friends. Culica is a devilish “Just one more go!” game.

Then try Culica on “Normal”, “Hard” and “Insane” difficulty modes – and find yourself becoming increasingly challenged! In a fun way :) And let us know if you win on “Insane” mode! Below, you can see a screen-shot of Culica in “Insane” mode. Where as in “easy” mode you have all of the time in the world to ponder each move, in the other difficulty levels the cubes “shrink” as you can see in the image below. Let them shrink to nothing and it’s Game Over better luck next time! So as the difficulty levels get harder, you have to be both more cunning about your move strategy and up your speed. Believe it or not, this actually increases the fun for the thrill seekers amongst us. :)

Culica: "Insane" Difficulty Level

Culica has over 16 million possible combinations, but don’t worry, in easy mode it’s not too difficult to solve. Culica is ingenious and you will be so impressed you will forget your name for several days. If you like extraordinary games like Rubik’s Cube, Sudoku, chess, Tetris and so on, you will adore Culica ® which is even more fun than those other games! :)

Culica: Yo have won!
Upon victory Mr Blockhead (above) will invite you to enter your name. Congratulations! Your glory is complete!

Culica High Scores

If you’re fast you will have the honour of winning in the fewest moves. If you’re a bit of a wizard at strategy you will win in the fewest moves. As they say, it’s not winning, it’s the taking part that counts, and even if that elusive victory escapes you, the point is, you will have a lot of fun trying!

For mathematicians: the number of permutations (combinations or configurations, you know what I mean) of the large Culica shape (4 colours) is 4^12 = 16,777,216. The number of permutations is reduced to 4,195,360 when colour combinations that are unchanged under rotations are considered equivalent, or 2,102,848 if permutations unchanged under reflection are also considered equivalent. The calculations can be done by applying an amazing group theory formula called Burnside’s formula and are shown here: Analysis of Culica. This analysis is by a professional mathematician who is an expert in “group theory”. (Note, none of this is to do with actually playing Culica, just about anybody can easily play Culcia, 11 year-olds to 111 year-olds can play, you certainly don’t need to be good at maths, you don’t even have to be smart, it’s fun! Having said that, being good at maths is cool! :)
